A government contractor charged with protecting a highly valuable data set needed "remote backups", so said the RFP. An interesting twist, due to the nature of the data, the utmost in fidelity was a priority. In addition to designing a system that could not corrupt their original dataset, they required virtual full backups, heterogeneous source/target, and support for a combination of block and file based repositories.
Our designed solution blew them away. Using leading edge products, we designed a system that required just one remotely managed "backup server" at their site. From that one server, we were able to send virtual-full block based deltas to our remote sites. We required only read access to their data, ensuring the highest in fidelity of their original data. Finally, all restores were done to alternate paths or targets, so in no way could our team could harm their valuable data through an unintentional restore. The client was tasked with re-integrating the highly valuable data by hand, as they preferred.
